Tactical Fishing
Catch a Fish... without a Fishing Rod!
Overview
Tactical Fishing is a task advancement in the Husbandry tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Catch a Fish... without a Fishing Rod." It branches directly off Fishy Business, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Husbandry tab covers advancements related to farming, animal breeding, food, and the natural world. Tactical Fishing was added in Minecraft 1.13 and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.
It is rated Easy difficulty on this site: can be completed quickly with minimal resources. Good for beginners. It uses the standard task frame, meaning it is a normal step in the tree rather than a goal or challenge milestone. Nothing else in the tree depends on it, so it is a leaf at the tip of its branch.
In tree terms, Tactical Fishing sits second along its line: the full path from the Husbandry root reads Husbandry -> Fishy Business -> Tactical Fishing. That means 2 advancements must be completed before this one becomes available, and Tactical Fishing is one of 26 total advancements in the Husbandry tab. No other advancement shares its parent, so it is the only thing that branches from Fishy Business.
How to Complete Tactical Fishing
Earning Tactical Fishing comes down to the following, performed in order:
- Use a water bucket on a fish (cod, salmon, pufferfish, or tropical fish) to catch it.
- Find fish swimming in water and right-click on them with a water bucket to get a bucket of fish.
Tips & Fastest Route
- Fastest route: Right-click a swimming fish with a water bucket to scoop it up.
- Cod, salmon, pufferfish and tropical fish can all be bucketed.
- A bucketed fish never despawns, which makes this the standard way to transport fish.
- Make sure Fishy Business is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Tactical Fishing will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
- This is one of the more approachable Husbandry advancements, so it is a good early target while you build toward the harder entries deeper in the branch.
Common Mistakes
- Remember that Tactical Fishing will not appear as available until Fishy Business is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.
Reward & What It Unlocks
Completing Tactical Fishing grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.
It is a leaf advancement, so nothing further unlocks from it; it stands as a completed tip of its branch.
