Surge Protector

Protect a Villager from an undesired shock without starting a fire

Overview

Surge Protector is a task advancement in the Adventure tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Protect a Villager from an undesired shock without starting a fire." It branches directly off Adventure, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Adventure tab covers advancements focused on exploration, combat, trading, and interacting with the world and its inhabitants. Surge Protector was added in Minecraft 1.17, from the Caves & Cliffs update, and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.

It is rated Hard difficulty on this site: requires significant effort, rare resources, or dangerous encounters. It uses the standard task frame, meaning it is a normal step in the tree rather than a goal or challenge milestone. One further advancement, Very Very Frightening, is gated behind it.

In tree terms, Surge Protector sits first along its line: the full path from the Adventure root reads Adventure -> Surge Protector. That means 1 advancement must be completed before this one becomes available, and Surge Protector is one of 40 total advancements in the Adventure tab. It shares its parent with 16 sibling advancements (Voluntary Exile, Monster Hunter, What a Deal!, Sticky Situation, Ol' Betsy, Crafting a New Look, Adventuring Time, Sweet Dreams, Is It a Bird?, Caves & Cliffs, Under Lock and Key, Who Needs Rockets?, Blowback, Minecraft: Trial(s) Edition, Postmortal, and Respecting the Remnants), all of which open from the same point in the tree.

How to Complete Surge Protector

Earning Surge Protector comes down to the following, performed in order:

  1. Place a lightning rod near a villager during a thunderstorm so that when lightning strikes, it hits the rod instead of the villager, and no fire is started.
  2. The rod must be within 128 blocks of the lightning strike.

Tips & Fastest Route

  • Fastest route: Place a lightning rod adjacent to a villager during a thunderstorm so the bolt hits the rod and starts no fire.
  • Put the rod on a non-flammable block like stone so the strike cannot ignite anything.
  • Trident with Channeling can force the strike during a storm if you do not want to wait.
  • Make sure Adventure is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Surge Protector will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
  • At Hard difficulty, Surge Protector rewards preparation over speed — line up the items and conditions in the steps first rather than improvising mid-attempt.

Common Mistakes

  • If the lightning starts any fire, the advancement is denied, so clear flammable blocks nearby.
  • Remember that Surge Protector will not appear as available until Adventure is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.

Reward & What It Unlocks

Completing Surge Protector grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.

Earning it unlocks Very Very Frightening, which becomes the next step along this branch of the tree.
