Star Trader

Trade with a Villager at the build limit

Overview

Star Trader is a task advancement in the Adventure tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Trade with a Villager at the build limit." It branches directly off What a Deal!, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Adventure tab covers advancements focused on exploration, combat, trading, and interacting with the world and its inhabitants. Star Trader was added in Minecraft 1.18 and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.

It is rated Hard difficulty on this site: requires significant effort, rare resources, or dangerous encounters. It uses the standard task frame, meaning it is a normal step in the tree rather than a goal or challenge milestone. Nothing else in the tree depends on it, so it is a leaf at the tip of its branch.

In tree terms, Star Trader sits second along its line: the full path from the Adventure root reads Adventure -> What a Deal! -> Star Trader. That means 2 advancements must be completed before this one becomes available, and Star Trader is one of 40 total advancements in the Adventure tab. No other advancement shares its parent, so it is the only thing that branches from What a Deal!.

How to Complete Star Trader

Earning Star Trader comes down to the following, performed in order:

  1. Complete a trade with a villager while at the build height limit (Y 320).
  2. Bring a villager up to the build limit using boats, minecarts, or nether portals, then trade with them.

Tips & Fastest Route

  • Fastest route: Carry a villager up to Y 320 and complete a trade at the build limit.
  • Boats, minecarts or a stack of scaffolding are common ways to elevate the villager.
  • A nether portal stack or a tall water column can also lift the villager to the height limit.
  • Make sure What a Deal! is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Star Trader will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
  • At Hard difficulty, Star Trader rewards preparation over speed — line up the items and conditions in the steps first rather than improvising mid-attempt.

Common Mistakes

  • Remember that Star Trader will not appear as available until What a Deal! is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.

Reward & What It Unlocks

Completing Star Trader grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.

It is a leaf advancement, so nothing further unlocks from it; it stands as a completed tip of its branch.
