Hired Help
Summon an Iron Golem to help defend a village
Overview
Hired Help is a goal advancement in the Adventure tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Summon an Iron Golem to help defend a village." It branches directly off Monster Hunter, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Adventure tab covers advancements focused on exploration, combat, trading, and interacting with the world and its inhabitants. Hired Help was added in Minecraft 1.12 and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.
It is rated Easy difficulty on this site: can be completed quickly with minimal resources. Good for beginners. It is classed as a goal advancement, which renders with the rounded goal frame in the menu and marks a notable objective along the way rather than a trivial step. Nothing else in the tree depends on it, so it is a leaf at the tip of its branch.
In tree terms, Hired Help sits second along its line: the full path from the Adventure root reads Adventure -> Monster Hunter -> Hired Help. That means 2 advancements must be completed before this one becomes available, and Hired Help is one of 40 total advancements in the Adventure tab. It shares its parent with 4 sibling advancements (Monsters Hunted, Take Aim, It Spreads, and Throwing Things), all of which open from the same point in the tree.
How to Complete Hired Help
Earning Hired Help comes down to the following, performed in order:
- Build an iron golem by placing 4 iron blocks in a T-shape and putting a carved pumpkin on top.
- The golem will defend nearby villagers from hostile mobs.
Tips & Fastest Route
- Fastest route: Place 4 iron blocks in a T and top it with a carved pumpkin to build an iron golem.
- The pumpkin must be placed last, and it must be a carved pumpkin, not a plain one.
- Build it near villagers and it will count as defending the village.
- Make sure Monster Hunter is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Hired Help will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
- This is one of the more approachable Adventure advancements, so it is a good early target while you build toward the harder entries deeper in the branch.
Common Mistakes
- Remember that Hired Help will not appear as available until Monster Hunter is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.
Reward & What It Unlocks
Completing Hired Help grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.
It is a leaf advancement, so nothing further unlocks from it; it stands as a completed tip of its branch.
