Stone Age

Mine Stone with your new Pickaxe

Overview

Stone Age is a task advancement in the Minecraft tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Mine Stone with your new Pickaxe." It branches directly off Minecraft, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Minecraft tab covers the main story progression tree. Stone Age was added in Minecraft 1.12 and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.

It is rated Easy difficulty on this site: can be completed quickly with minimal resources. Good for beginners. It uses the standard task frame, meaning it is a normal step in the tree rather than a goal or challenge milestone. One further advancement, Getting an Upgrade, is gated behind it.

In tree terms, Stone Age sits first along its line: the full path from the Minecraft root reads Minecraft -> Stone Age. That means 1 advancement must be completed before this one becomes available, and Stone Age is one of 14 total advancements in the Minecraft tab. No other advancement shares its parent, so it is the only thing that branches from Minecraft.

How to Complete Stone Age

Earning Stone Age comes down to the following, performed in order:

  1. Craft a wooden pickaxe from 3 planks and 2 sticks, then mine a stone block (cobblestone, deepslate, or blackstone).
  2. The pickaxe requires a crafting table.

Tips & Fastest Route

  • Fastest route: Punch a tree for logs, craft planks then a crafting table and sticks, make a wooden pickaxe, and mine any stone variant.
  • Cobblestone, deepslate and blackstone all count, so you do not need to find smooth stone specifically.
  • Keep the cobblestone you mine: it is the input for the very next advancement, Getting an Upgrade.
  • Make sure Minecraft is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Stone Age will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
  • This is one of the more approachable Minecraft advancements, so it is a good early target while you build toward the harder entries deeper in the branch.

Common Mistakes

  • Mining stone with your bare hand drops nothing and does not count; the pickaxe must be in hand when the block breaks.
  • Remember that Stone Age will not appear as available until Minecraft is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.

Reward & What It Unlocks

Completing Stone Age grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.

Earning it unlocks Getting an Upgrade, which becomes the next step along this branch of the tree.
