Hot Stuff
Fill a Bucket with lava
Overview
Hot Stuff is a task advancement in the Minecraft tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Fill a Bucket with lava." It branches directly off Acquire Hardware, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Minecraft tab covers the main story progression tree. Hot Stuff was added in Minecraft 1.12 and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.
It is rated Easy difficulty on this site: can be completed quickly with minimal resources. Good for beginners. It uses the standard task frame, meaning it is a normal step in the tree rather than a goal or challenge milestone. Nothing else in the tree depends on it, so it is a leaf at the tip of its branch.
In tree terms, Hot Stuff sits fourth along its line: the full path from the Minecraft root reads Minecraft -> Stone Age -> Getting an Upgrade -> Acquire Hardware -> Hot Stuff. That means 4 advancements must be completed before this one becomes available, and Hot Stuff is one of 14 total advancements in the Minecraft tab. It shares its parent with 2 sibling advancements (Suit Up and Isn't It Iron Pick), all of which open from the same point in the tree.
How to Complete Hot Stuff
Earning Hot Stuff comes down to the following, performed in order:
- Craft a bucket from 3 iron ingots, then right-click on a lava source block to fill it.
- Lava pools can be found on the surface, in caves, or abundantly in the Nether.
Tips & Fastest Route
- Fastest route: Right-click a surface lava pool with an empty bucket.
- You need a full lava source block, not flowing lava; the still, bubbling block is the source.
- Caves below Y 11 are full of lava lakes if you have no surface pools nearby.
- Make sure Acquire Hardware is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Hot Stuff will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
- This is one of the more approachable Minecraft advancements, so it is a good early target while you build toward the harder entries deeper in the branch.
Common Mistakes
- Scooping a flowing lava stream gives you nothing; aim for the source block at the top of the flow.
- Remember that Hot Stuff will not appear as available until Acquire Hardware is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.
Reward & What It Unlocks
Completing Hot Stuff grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.
It is a leaf advancement, so nothing further unlocks from it; it stands as a completed tip of its branch.
