Blowback

Deflect a projectile back at an entity with your shield

Overview

Blowback is a task advancement in the Adventure tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Deflect a projectile back at an entity with your shield." It branches directly off Adventure, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Adventure tab covers advancements focused on exploration, combat, trading, and interacting with the world and its inhabitants. Blowback was added in Minecraft 1.21, part of the Tricky Trials update, and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.

It is rated Medium difficulty on this site: requires some preparation or specific resources. Part of normal gameplay progression. It uses the standard task frame, meaning it is a normal step in the tree rather than a goal or challenge milestone. Nothing else in the tree depends on it, so it is a leaf at the tip of its branch.

In tree terms, Blowback sits first along its line: the full path from the Adventure root reads Adventure -> Blowback. That means 1 advancement must be completed before this one becomes available, and Blowback is one of 40 total advancements in the Adventure tab. It shares its parent with 16 sibling advancements (Voluntary Exile, Monster Hunter, What a Deal!, Sticky Situation, Ol' Betsy, Surge Protector, Crafting a New Look, Adventuring Time, Sweet Dreams, Is It a Bird?, Caves & Cliffs, Under Lock and Key, Who Needs Rockets?, Minecraft: Trial(s) Edition, Postmortal, and Respecting the Remnants), all of which open from the same point in the tree.

How to Complete Blowback

Earning Blowback comes down to the following, performed in order:

  1. Block a Breeze's wind charge with a shield so that it bounces back and hits a mob.
  2. This requires positioning yourself between a Breeze and another mob.

Tips & Fastest Route

  • Fastest route: Block a Breeze's wind charge with a shield so it ricochets back and hits another mob.
  • Stand so a second mob is directly behind you in line with the Breeze.
  • The wind charge must be the deflected projectile that strikes the other mob.
  • Make sure Adventure is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Blowback will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
  • At Medium difficulty, Blowback is a routine step once you have the prerequisites in hand; no special grinding is usually needed beyond the items the steps call for.

Common Mistakes

  • Remember that Blowback will not appear as available until Adventure is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.

Reward & What It Unlocks

Completing Blowback grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.

It is a leaf advancement, so nothing further unlocks from it; it stands as a completed tip of its branch.
