Where each advancement is earned

Only seven of the 23 Nether advancements give experience, 1,950 points between them. Most of the rest belong to one place, so it saves trips to know where each one happens.

In a Nether fortress
A Terrible Fortress comes as soon as you are inside a fortress. A blaze drops none or one rod for Into Fire, and Looting can add one more per level. Wither skeletons drop the skull for Spooky Scary Skeleton 2.5 percent of the time, one point more per Looting level, and only when a player lands the kill. Three skulls are what you need for Withering Heights.
In a bastion remnant
Walking in gives Those Were the Days. For War Pigs you have to open a bastion chest that nobody has opened before, so a chest another player already looted doesn't count. Treasure room chests always hold a netherite upgrade smithing template, and every other bastion chest has a 10 percent chance of one, which is where Cover Me in Debris starts.
Out in the open Nether
Ancient debris for Hidden in the Depths is most common at Y 16. Any adult piglin can give you Oh Shiny. Bartering gold ingots with piglins brings crying obsidian for Who is Cutting Onions? in about one trade out of twelve, one to three blocks at a time. Six of them with three glowstone make the anchor for Not Quite "Nine" Lives. Killing a ghast with a fireball you hit back earns Return to Sender, riding a strider gives This Boat Has Legs, and Hot Tourist Destinations asks you to set foot in all five Nether biomes for 500 experience.
Back in the Overworld
Uneasy Alliance, Feels Like Home and Subspace Bubble belong to this tab, but you finish them on the Overworld side of a portal.
Wherever you build
Local Brewery, Bring Home the Beacon, Beaconator and the two effect challenges below only need the materials you bring back.

What the descriptions leave out

Oh Shiny
Take off every piece of gold armor first. The advancement only counts when you wear none, because the idea is to distract a piglin that would otherwise attack you. Throw it any gold item piglins love, from a gold block to a golden carrot, or use a gold ingot on it. Gold nuggets and baby piglins don't count.
This Boat Has Legs
Steering is not enough. Use the warped fungus on a stick to give the strider a boost, because the advancement comes when the stick loses durability.
Feels Like Home
The 50 blocks are measured in a straight line from where the ride began, so circling a small pool never gets there. Striders follow a player holding warped fungus, which is how you walk one into a portal; a lead snaps when the strider goes through. Open cave space from Y -55 down to Y -63 fills with lava when the world generates, and those lakes are far larger than the small lava lakes near the surface.
Uneasy Alliance
The game checks that you are in the Overworld when the ghast dies, so bring the ghast through a portal first. A happy ghast is a different mob and doesn't count.
Subspace Bubble
What counts is the straight distance between the spot where you left the Overworld and the spot where you come back, which has to be 7,000 blocks. The Nether is scaled 1 to 8, so that is 875 blocks of travel on the Nether side.
Withering Heights
Any of the three skulls can go on last, not only the middle one. Everyone within about 50 blocks of the wither when it appears gets the advancement.
Not Quite "Nine" Lives
The fourth charge has to come from a glowstone block you use on the anchor yourself. A dispenser can charge an anchor too, but that doesn't count.
Beaconator
The game only checks at the moment a beacon switches on, and you have to be within about 10 blocks of it. Build all four levels of the pyramid, 164 blocks, before you place the beacon, or break the beacon and place it again once the pyramid is done.
Cover Me in Debris
The four pieces only have to be in your inventory. Every upgrade uses up a netherite upgrade smithing template, and seven diamonds with a block of netherrack turn one template into two.
Hidden in the Depths
The larger clusters sit between Y 8 and Y 24 and the smaller ones anywhere from Y 8 to Y 119, never next to air. Ancient debris survives explosions, so beds, which explode in the Nether, and TNT clear the netherrack around it.

The two effect challenges

A Furious Cocktail checks 17 effects: Fire Resistance, Infested, Invisibility, Jump Boost, Night Vision, Oozing, Poison, Regeneration, Resistance, Slow Falling, Slowness, Speed, Strength, Water Breathing, Weakness, Weaving and Wind Charged.

Resistance has no potion of its own. A Potion of the Turtle Master gives it together with Slowness, and a beacon set to Resistance works from a pyramid of two levels up. The four newest potions are Infestation from stone, Oozing from a slime block, Weaving from cobweb and Wind Charging from a breeze rod, each added to an awkward potion. They last three minutes and redstone can't extend them. Turtle Master lasts 20 seconds, or 40 when extended, so drink it last.

How Did We Get Here? wants 34 effects at once, which is every effect in the game except Instant Health, Instant Damage, Health Boost, Saturation, Luck and Bad Luck. Besides the 17 above it needs another 17, among them Bad Omen, Raid Omen and Trial Omen at the same time. Bad Omen only comes from drinking an ominous bottle. It turns into Raid Omen when you walk into a village and into Trial Omen when a trial spawner sees you, and a raid starts 30 seconds after Raid Omen appears. Hero of the Village comes from winning a raid and lasts 40 minutes, and Breath of the Nautilus is given while you ride a nautilus or a zombie nautilus. Its 1,000 experience is the biggest reward of any advancement.
