Throwing Things

Throw a Trident at something. Note: Throwing your only weapon is not a good idea.

Overview

Throwing Things is a task advancement in the Adventure tab of Minecraft's advancement system, carrying the in-game description "Throw a Trident at something. Note: Throwing your only weapon is not a good idea." It branches directly off Monster Hunter, so that earlier advancement is its prerequisite and must be earned first. The Adventure tab covers advancements focused on exploration, combat, trading, and interacting with the world and its inhabitants. Throwing Things was added in Minecraft 1.13 and remains part of the current 1.21 advancement set.

It is rated Medium difficulty on this site: requires some preparation or specific resources. Part of normal gameplay progression. It uses the standard task frame, meaning it is a normal step in the tree rather than a goal or challenge milestone. One further advancement, A Throwaway Joke, is gated behind it.

In tree terms, Throwing Things sits second along its line: the full path from the Adventure root reads Adventure -> Monster Hunter -> Throwing Things. That means 2 advancements must be completed before this one becomes available, and Throwing Things is one of 40 total advancements in the Adventure tab. It shares its parent with 4 sibling advancements (Monsters Hunted, Take Aim, It Spreads, and Hired Help), all of which open from the same point in the tree.

How to Complete Throwing Things

To earn Throwing Things:

  1. Obtain a trident from a Drowned (8.5% drop chance, 11.5% with Looting III) and throw it at any entity by holding right-click to charge and releasing.

Tips & Fastest Route

  • Fastest route: Obtain a trident from a Drowned and throw it at any entity.
  • Tridents drop from Drowned at 8.5%, rising to 11.5% with Looting III; only naturally-spawned Drowned can carry one.
  • Without Loyalty the trident stays where it lands, so be ready to retrieve it.
  • Make sure Monster Hunter is already ticked off before you start, otherwise Throwing Things will not be tracked even if you perform the steps correctly.
  • At Medium difficulty, Throwing Things is a routine step once you have the prerequisites in hand; no special grinding is usually needed beyond the items the steps call for.

Common Mistakes

  • Remember that Throwing Things will not appear as available until Monster Hunter is done, since the game only tracks an advancement once its parent has been unlocked.

Reward & What It Unlocks

Completing Throwing Things grants 10 experience points. The XP drops at your position the moment the advancement fires.

Earning it unlocks A Throwaway Joke, which becomes the next step along this branch of the tree.
